I Can't Draw

When I mention that I am a creativity coach and work with creative tools to increase creative intelligence 80% of people respond my saying “I can’t draw” and then dismiss anything else I might have to say.

I am currently offering a funky and fun creative play journaling class.  The four week class will teach women how to start using their creativity muscle to build creative intelligence.  Four weeks of fun exercises and connection with others.  As I have promoted the class I have received several e-mails back and you will never guess what they say.  Yep, “I can’t draw” and so I can’t participate.

I find this sad and yet I am curious when creativity and drawing became synonyms for each other.  I suspect our educational system as something to do with it.  I believe our schools kill the creative process and it has nothing to do with drawing or art classes.  For more information watch Sir Ken Robins Ted Talk on schools and creativity.
The truth is that creativity and drawing really don’t have a lot to do with each other.  Creativity is this wonderful and magical process of creating new ideas, new awareness and new connections.  Drawing your cat or a bowl of fruit is replicating an image.  The way you draw can be creative but not necessarily.  So for the record, DRAWING IS NOT CREATIVITY.

We need creativity in our lives.  We need it in our schools.  We need it in our homes.  We need it at work.  Why?  Because it helps evolve our critical thinking skills for problems solving.  It helps us create a better life.  It helps us create meaning and purpose.  When you leave this world all that will be left is what you created.

So, I invite you to start building your creative muscle by participating in my journaling class.  Our club house will be online at Facebook.  If you can sort of draw a square, line, circle and triangle then you have all the skills you need.

Here are the class details!
Here is what we will do in our Facebook Club House
  • Week One Theme:  Building Confidence through Permission Slips
  • Week Two Theme:  Taming your Perfectionist Gremlin
  • Week Three Theme:   The ENOUMOUS Benefits of Doodling

The class will start with a one hour conference call on Thursday May 8th at 4:00 PST/7:00 EST.  The call will be recorded so don't worry if you can't make it.
